Reinventing DevOps/SysAdmin (Intro)

The term “DevOps” have been thrown around for years. Initially just a fad (and still sort of is, as a “terminology”), it is pretty much summarized to me as System Administrator, with a lot of provisioning automation specialist stuff.

The System Administrator (now “Systems Engineer”) is mainly a maintainer role now – despite what I envision as more than just “sit and watch”. It is about improvements, innovation, constantly exploring new options for better efficency, security threats, and finally being able to present it.

So instead of a battle, I do think that you can have a SysAdmin AND a DevOps admin exist together.

I have however revamped my home-lab situation – now with:
* FC-Xen virtualization
* VMWare ESXi
* XenServer
Having a fresh start on some of these, I have revisited the idea of bare-metal automation/provisioning. This has forced me into the DevOps side of research and found that most of the tools are still incomplete for what I am looking for. I will try to document my journeys and downfalls.

Personally – I do understand the idea of not reinventing the wheel, but often it is by reinventing it that we understand what lies under the hood.
