Pros
- Free
- Clean, slick and installs on latest WordPress
Cons
- Hidden crippleware
Doesn’t show as a Lite theme, but has features that you can’t really customize to encourage upgrade to Pro version
Locked features
- Background colour
- Removal of first slider (see workaround below)
Review
I’ve never been an avid blogger myself, but I’m starting to uplift my game. Instead of coding everything from scratch, why not leverage security and the pooled information of the internet.. yet I found that even the simplest of things (WordPress) especially the themes, are highly cripped in a lot of ways. Today the review falls on Athena, a theme I found years ago and never fully tested it.
Methodology
WordPress > Download Theme
- 7⃣ Look at defaults
- First impressions : decent [ ok+5 ]
- Seems to roughly match the demos [ ok ]
- Features seemed good [ ok ]
- 3⃣ Look to customize it back to a decent page layout
- Menu location [ ok ]
- My usual colour scheme [fail]
- Look at features
- Look to see what features stand out from other themes
- Look at owner/creator’s ethics
I did find bugs in the the spinner up top.
Overall, not impressed. WordPress should mostly be plug/play these days. I will leave this up for about 1 week for anyone to look for themselves.. bugs and all
Bugs found
Usually with polished themes, there should be no reason to find anything weird and bugs.
- The spinner at the top never stopped spinning
- Logo was not formatted right
Workarounds
Removing the ‘slider’ which boasts “Responsive, customizable, woocommerce” can’t ben removed easily at first glance. Had to resort to ‘custom css’ (nice they included that) to add
#athena-featured { display: none; visibility: hidden; }
